All People That On Earth Do Dwell

Words: William Kethe, late 16th century
Music: Louis Bourgeois, 1551

Stanza 1:

All people that on earth do dwell,

Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice,

Him serve with fear, His praise forthtell;

Come ye before Him and rejoice.

Stanza 2:

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;

Without our aid He did us make.

We are His folk, He doth us feed,

And for His sheep He doth us take.

Stanza 3:

Oh, enter, then, His gates with praise,

Approach with joy His courts unto;

Praise, laud, and bless His name always.

For it is seemly so to do.

Stanza 4:

For why? The Lord, our God, is good;

His mercy is forever sure.

His truth at all times firmly stood

And shall from age to age endure.

Stanza 5:

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

To God whom heaven and earth adore,

From men and from the angel host

Be praise and glory evermore.

Hymn Lyrics In French

I found the lyric for this traditional hymn in French written by Théodore de Bèze and decided to add it here just in case there are French speaking Christians who would like to sing it in their native language.

I don't know French :-) so if there's any error in any of these four stanzas , please let me know. (Yes, there are only four stanzas whereas the English version has five.)

Thanks!

Lyriques: Théodore de Bèze (1519-1605)

Stanza 1:

Vous, qui sur la terre habitez,
Chantez à haute voix, chantez;
Réjouissez-vous au Seigneur,
Par un saint hymne à Son honneur.

Stanza 2:

Sachez qu’Il est le Souverain,
Qu’Il nous a formés de Sa main,
Nous, le peuple qu’Il veut chérir,
Et le troupeau qu’Il veut nourrir.

Stanza 3:

Entrez dans Son temple aujourd’hui;
Prosternez-vous tous devant Lui;
Et, de concert avec les cieux,
Célébrez Son Nom glorieux.

Stanza 4:

C’est un Dieu rempli de bonté,
D’une éternelle vérité,
Toujours propice à nos souhaits,
Et Sa grâce dure à jamais.

Praise the LORD.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise Him!

~ Psalm 147:1
