O Store Gud

O Store Gud (O Great God) was a poem written by Carl Boberg, Mönsterås (south-eastern Sweden) in 1885. It was a rather long poem. There are altogether nine stanzas in this poem. The poem was sung in a church in Sweden in 1888 to a Swedish folk tune. It was said to be a paraphrase of Psalm 8 and was used in the underground church in the late 1880s.

Carl Boberg later sold the rights to this poem to the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden.

It was later translated into German in 1907 entitled 'Wie groß bist Du’ and to Russian in 1912 and known as 'Velikiy Bog’.

In 1925, verses 1 to 2, and 7 to 9 were literally translated to English by E. Gustav Johnson (1893–1974) and was titled ‘O Mighty God’.

This is also the hymn that inspired Stuart Wesley Keene Hine, a Methodist missionary to write the great Christian hymn, How Great Thou Art.

O Store Gud

Stanza 1:

O store Gud,

när jag den verld beskådar

Som du har skapat

med ditt allmaktsord,

Hur der din visdom

leder lifvets trådar,

Och alla väsen

mättas vid ditt bord;

Refrain:

Då brister själen

ut i lofsångsljud:

O store Gud!

O store Gud!

Stanza 2:

När jag betraktar

himlens höga under,

Der gyllne verldsskepp

plöja etern blå,

Och sol och måne

mäta tidens stunder

Och vexla om,

som tvänne klockor gå;

Refrain:

Stanza 3:

När jag hör åskans

röst i stormen brusa

Och blixtens klingor

springa fram ur skyn,

När regnets kalla,

friska vindar susa

Och löftets båge

glänser för min syn;

Refrain:

Stanza 5:

När jag i bibeln

skådar alla under,

Som Herren gjort

sen förste Adams tid,

Hur nådefull

han varit alla stunder

Och hjälpt sitt folk

ur lifvets synd och strid;

Refrain:

Stanza 7:

Och när jag ser

hans bild till jorden sväfva

Och göra väl

och hjälpa öfverallt,

När jag ser satan

fly och döden bäfva

För Herren i

förklarad korsgestalt:

Refrain:

Stanza 9:

När slutligt alla

tidens höljen falla,

Och i åskådning

byter sig min tro,

Och evighetens

klara klockor kalla

Min frälsta ande

till dess sabbatsro;

Refrain:

Då brister själen

ut i lofsångsljud

Tack, gode Gud!

Tack, gode Gud!
